We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Payroll Officer to join our Payroll & Pensions team. This role is essential in ensuring the accurate and timely delivery of payroll services, supporting both Police Officers and Police Staff, and contributing to the smooth operation of the wider Constabulary.
The successful candidate will bring strong technical knowledge, excellent organisational ability, and a commitment to delivering a high-quality service within a fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Administer and process monthly payrolls accurately and in line with statutory requirements.
- Maintain and update payroll records, always ensuring accuracy and confidentiality.
- Provide advice and support on payroll, pension schemes, tax, National Insurance, Police Regulations and staff terms and conditions.
- Reconcile payroll information and support year-end processes.
- Respond to payroll queries efficiently and professionally, consulting with internal and external stakeholders.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of payroll procedures and systems.
- Ensure compliance with legislation, regulations, and Force policies, applying discretion and sound judgement where necessary.
Essential Qualifications, Skills & Experience
- 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) including English and Mathematics.
- Payroll qualification (CIPP) or a minimum of 2 years demonstrable payroll experience.
- Proven and up-to-date technical knowledge of payroll, pensions, and tax.
- Strong experience using computerised payroll systems and spreadsheet applications.
- Fast and accurate keyboard skills.
- Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to negotiate confidently.
- Ability to meet deadlines, manage competing priorities, and work under pressure.
- Strong analytical skills and excellent attention to detail.
- Ability to develop a good understanding of Police Regulations, Police Staff terms and conditions, and Local Government and Police Pension Schemes.
- Ability to interpret regulations and policy where precedent may not exist.
- An appreciation of constabulary operations and the wider Police Service context.
- A flexible approach to working and a positive attitude towards change.
